If you ask a weak villager to chop wood or mine, they'll be unhappy. You must provide your villagers with a place to sleep so they'll join you. However, an empty house won't make anyone wake up happy for a new day. You need to craft and place furnitures in your villagers' homes. Finally, believing they'll survive an incoming raid will make your villagers happy. For this, you should craft armor and give it to them. As your village develops, it'll start to become a city. You'll be able to build massive stone walls and place defensive weapons on them. You'll need this because armies, not just bandits, will begin to attack your city.
