SOMA remains a masterpiece of existential sci-fi horror, blending a haunting underwater setting with deep philosophical questions about consciousness. Finding games that match its unique atmosphere can be challenging, but certain titles capture that same sense of dread and thought-provoking narrative.
Amnesia: The Bunker
Created by Frictional Games, the masterminds behind SOMA, Amnesia: The Bunker takes a different approach to horror while maintaining the developer's signature tension. Set in a desolate World War I bunker, players must manage limited resources, confront a relentless beast in the dark, and uncover the grim fate of their comrades. It rewards improvisation and player agency, making it a thrilling experience for horror fans.
Observer: System Redux
For those who loved the cyberpunk aesthetic and dystopian themes of SOMA, Observer: System Redux is an essential playthrough. You step into the shoes of a neural detective in a dark future, hacking into the minds of the dead and insane to solve crimes. The psychological horror elements, combined with stunning next-gen visuals, create an immersive world questioning the very nature of humanity.
Alien: Isolation
If the suffocating atmosphere and relentless hiding mechanics of SOMA are what you crave, Alien: Isolation delivers on all fronts. Trapped on a failing space station with a terrifying Xenomorph, you must scavenge for survival tools while using your wits to stay out of sight. The artificial intelligence of the alien ensures that no two playthroughs are alike, keeping your adrenaline pumping from start to finish.
